Help engine still wont start
Hi All
I am trying to get my 1300 vw beetle engine to fire up.
the engine has recently been stripped down and rebuilt.
The engine is now back in the car, everything is connected up. It is now running a 009 dizzy as the original one packed up.
It turns over well when the coil is disconnected and there is no nasty grinding or banging.
I have static timed the engine to 7 degrees ( which i am led to believe is correct).
The plugs are sparking and have have a good spark, but there doesnt seem to be any fuel getting down to the engine from the carb.
I have stripped and cleaned the carb out today, ensuring all the jets are free from crap. After refitting to the car it has made no difference.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I have checked everything that I can think off, If i put a drop of fuel down the carb and turn the key, it does ignite.
The carb fuel reservoir is full aswell.
thanks again
Matt

You have the right length rod for the fuel pump if you take the pipes off and turn the engine fuel comes out . . . you havent got a fuel filter in between the fuel pump and carb if so remove it they can cause issues.

Re: Help engine still wont start
just a thought if you have a std carb on there is their power going to the cut off solenoid on the slow running/idle circuit that would make starting extremly difficult and hard to keep it going. If you disconnect and reconnect it from the power you should hear a click with the ignition turned on. As daz said try turning the engine over with the fuel pipes diconnected and see if its pumping fuel to rule out the fuel pump. If the float bowl is full, fuel should also be pumped out when you press the accelerator right down abit like pouring petrol down the carb.

Thanks for the replies
The fuel pump rod is the one that was on the engine before I stripped it down,
The solenoid is clicking in when power is put to it.
I don't think the engine is getting enough fuel, because when u press the throttle on the carb I can't see any fuel getting let down the carb. Also the plugs don't seem to Newquay wet.
I have checked all the carbs jets and they are clear.
Does anyone have a spare standard carb I can try, to see if that Ida causing the problem?

Sounds like a fuel blockage somewhere. Check to see if you've got fuel at the bottom of the tank outlet and then all the way along the fuel line to the carb. I had a similar problem in my old Beetle where the filter in the electric fuel pump was blocked with some debris from the tank.

Re: Help engine still wont start
Hi all
I am still having no luck getting the car started, I have fitted the carb which Owen has lent me, fitted new coil, leads, plugs.
I have checked the points, spark plug gap, timing, made sure it is firing on the compression stroke, checked the earths etc.
The car turns over and makes some noise, every now and again I get blowback from carb and sometime pops out of exhaust but it just won't start.
I am unsure where to go from here, could do with another set of eyes to check it over if anyone has a spare hour. I would appreciate any help/ time anyone can spare
Thanks
Matt

Who did the rebuild? Was the cam syncd correctly with the timing gears?

Double and triple check the order of your HT leads to the plugs. A very easy mistake to make by the most confident mechanics.

Owen very kindly came over on Sunday and had a look at the car, we were unable to get the car running, He feels (and I agree) the engine is too tight. You are unable to turn it over by hand.
I have decided to take the engine back out and recheck the end float. If that is ok Will prob strip engine back down and see what has gone wrong.

If you haven't got it already, I can highly recommend How to Rebuild Your Aircooled Volkwagen Engine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0895862255
I've built 4 engines now following it and it's been invaluable.
