Bus in Garage today Empty Bus in Garage today

Post by Ronnieboy59 Thu Apr 24 2014, 08:42

Bus is going to Peter Howard today at 10am to investigate and fingers crossed find out what is the issue with the rear wheel hub/brakes etc and hopefully fix it so I can get the miles knocked up on the engine, Vicky farm not far round the corner and I really don't want to miss it, I did measure the rear drums either side and they appear to be exactly the same so I hope it's something simple like the lip on the backing plate or drum rubbing, or a sticky brake cylinder, fingers crossed, see ya all at the meet tomorrow.

Initial diagnosis from the rolling road at Peter Howard's is that there is an issue with the drive shaft, as it is a later beetle IRS Gearbox if it is the drive shaft and its knackerred then what parts do I require? Anyone got these parts out there for sale, are the drive shafts all various lengths ? Won't know much until later today as the bus is staying with Peter until Tomorrow at the earliest, just trying to get info on parts should I require to source them.

I would check one of the vw sites parts list but I think IRS beetle axles are all the same, think the only thing that changes is the gearbox ratios for the various engine sizes.

Might be worth given Paul Wisk a shout see if he has one lying around ....

Ta for the info Daz, I just thought perhaps early or later beetles may have been different, maybe pop up and see Pw tomorrow although Peter has not called me today so that maybe a good sign,,,fingers crossed, did check some sites and if it's a complete drive shaft one side then maybe worth doing both sides, at for info mate and see you tomorrow, not eating as will be on my own, Linda has family over.

Hi  Ron, as Daz says I think that  the IRS axles are the same whether its a 1303 or 1303S gearbox. Cheapest option may be to buy a complete gearbox as i doubt anyone would want to split it up unless the gearbox is duff.
Type 3 rear hubs I think are slightly wider than standard beetle hubs in fact the 1303 front hubs use the same size brake shoes as the type 3 rear ones for better brakes due to the 1303's being a heavier car.

Bus out of Garage this morning and guess what, the damn noise and rubbing/chaffing is still there, what a downer, had the cv bearing inner and outer changed on the suspected driveshaft and now back to square one, back to the garage Monday I think. Was so looking forward to knocking up some miles in the bus.

Bus going back to Martins garage for Peter to have another look tomorrow.I thought it may have been front bearing so gave them a tweak, the noise is getting worse every time I drive it, hope it gets sorted soon or no Vicky farm for us this year.

Thanks Daz, yes it's a bit of an odd one but will get there in the end, well Peter will I hope, it's getting expensive, could be anything, that turns under weight which narrows it down a bit LOL,

Fingers crossed for you mate. Maybe you just need a weekend away anyhow, you certainly deserve it!

Of course you want / need to be there in your van. That's the plan but you could always get your own back and camp, convoy with us as a suggestion

Bus in Garage today Empty Update from PH

Post by Ronnieboy59 Wed May 14 2014, 18:09

Bus has a totally seized wheel bearing on the shaft, the one I knew about prior to going to Vicky farm, at least it got us there and back, parts ordered and should be ready to collect Thurs/Friday, hope that's the last of the wheel issue but then I thought that the last time, maybe have to get the camber changed by Jim Merrin, hence all my stuff for sale, it will cost a lot,
Whilst at the vw Garage I was requested to do a prom 27th June if there are no plans that Friday then I will go ahead, if there is an outing then I won't , the guy works for Martins vw and it local in Andover, it's all for free but he said he will gift me something,,3 girlies in the bus for 20 mins, OMG WHAT HAVE I LET MYSELF INTO AGAIN.

Lisa had an MOT for her touran today and I was talking to Peter H about your van which is still looking very shiney. We both come to the same conclusion the axle adverse camber on your rear axle is probably what is seizing your bearings as they may not be getting lubricated. It is probably why people who go low straight axle and not IRS. Hope you get it sorted any ways mate.

Agree totally Daz, spoke to Jim Merrin about it a couple of weeks ago and will have him try to sort, or if there is a better cheaper solution ie swap for straight axle etc, can't keep this up, too expensive, just odd it's only on one side,

No bus this weekend,Euro parts sent the wrong wheel bearings 3 times, even sent bearings for a T4, hopefully GSF have sent the correct bearings today, collect bus Monday now, gutted because of the weather, wanted out and about in the bus this weekend.
