Tone & Linz 1971 Karmann Cabrio
The thread I had about this one had disappeared with the old forum (x2) so here we are again . 1971 Karmann Cabriolet imported from the States in 1976 and has had 11 owners in its life.
We bought it after it was being sold on the side of a country road in Wiltshire in May 2006 (remember Liam?) because it had failed its MOT.
It looked fairly smart in the pictures but I knew there was a lot of filler under that paint when I checked it over as the magnet was finding it difficult to stick. After some wheeling and dealing it was ours for a snip and we took it into care (much to Liam’s disappointment)
Here’s a couple from when it was stripped a couple of years ago
The old padded dash that hid the lhd to rhd conversion poop
Here are the new panels that we had bought for a new shell to be created
April 2010 and here he is waiting at the restorers (it was a long wait)
August 2010 mmmmmmmmmmm shiny new metal!!
September 2010 even more shiny new metal
Here you can see the heavy duty pans and the metal dash. Gone is the mangled mess the conversion had left
All that's left now is to get it sprayed and then it should be back home for the new rubber.
Trouble is the job has been done so well that I have to buy new chrome now coz it's gonna be a show winner (so I've been told)
So won't be going to Tesco's in that when it's complete
We're nearly there

He's home!
He's home! So when I get a moment then I’ll put everything back together again.
Had the window frames all re-chromed so first job is building the frames around the glass

Daz - I would like to have it ready for Stonor but we'll see how we get on!
Tint1n -
It went to restorer April 2010 and we got it back last week so just over a year but it took him just a couple of weeks to complete the welding. It was the hammering out creases, seam sealing and flatting that took the rest of the time. He did a lot of other work at the same time coz he needed to have a break from it now and again.
I got the chrome completed at a metal refinishers up here. (we're in Norwich now and the chrome work in Thetford) I thought I had found a place in Weyhill Industrial Estate when we lived down there but I can't remember who and can't see any local to Wiltshire in Yell.com now.
