Working on the VW today
But not an aircooled one Lisa's Touran, changing the suspension bushes picked up on the last MOT ..... bloody hell I see why I prefer old cars now . . .
- First where the hell do I jack it up ?
- Now remove ten tons of plastic under the arches engine etc along with 5 million screws.
- Everything is 16 or 18 mm (what happened to 17 & 19 eh) and needs the breaker bar to undo grrrrrh
- The drop links wont come off you have to put a hex socket in the centre and spanner on the outside what idiot come up with that design funny enough after years on the car they are so old and rusty the hex socket doesn't work, takes major brute force to pop the ends off and use mole grips to unbolt more grrrrrrhhh
- Finally got the wishbones off now the bushes wont budge ended up get a blow torch and burning them out that's a couple of years off my life in rubber fumes.
- Finally new drop links on and half the bushes ... a couple of bushes I cannot do without a press which I haven't got so going to have to drop them over my brothers tonight me thinks and hope he can do them at work, unless anybody can suggest somewhere.

Re: Working on the VW today
Know what you mean Daz, hate working on modern cars have to take it to bits to get to anything and the disturb something else which didn't need fixing. i can understand bolts shearing off of 40yr old vws and having to drill them out but not on newer cars which I usually end up doing. A bearing press is on my wish list but i would want a decent one thats floor mounted if you ever see one going cheap.
Will do, guess it's because most of them are aluminum now and bolts still steel never a good match with them going hot and cold ... it's all done now with super duper powerflex bushes so hopefully wont have to change them again.
