Hello. Thought I'd introduce myself and my family's first campervan. The camper doesn't have a name yet, we still have to choose, but it's a VW T25 1982 Aircooled. At the moment, we have a sound chassis, engine that needs a good service, pretty good bodywork, an interior in serious need of restoring and a roof that needs the leaky DIY hardtop removed and the original solid pop top restored, which we need to source.

(On that note, if anyone knows of a non-canvas elevating roof for this model we are VERY interested!)

She's white all over, will need a respray eventually and I'm on the hunt for colour schemes inside and out. We're ripping out all the carpet lining in the interior because we have a dog that sheds and kids that make mess! We may replace the cabinets but I'd prefer to give them a makeover and reinstall since they seem solid enough. We're installing, we hope, a triple seat at the back with 3-pt belts, a buddy seat and a dog harness close to the floor since there's little boot to secure her in to speak of.

Have already ordered a few bits and pieces, already ripped out some carpet, going to overhaul the cab first since that's the easiest and get the engine serviced. Probably replace the exhaust too. This weekend we're taking out some of the interior ply and looking at the roof from the inside to see what kind of patch was done on it and what's left, if anything, of the old structure.

That's pretty much it, looking forward to getting stuck in!

Thanks! Yeah, not having much luck with that. I'm not allowed to add external links for seven days and it's not uploading, just resetting back to the upload page. Odd, but nevermind, I'll add some pics in seven days, probably easier long term anyway to link back to the Picasa Album.

If anyone wants to look in the meantime, here it is:

EDITED: Hey, just read the Traders forum. You don't need pics, you drove it back from Pompey and I'm dropping her back to your garage for servicing. When the battery has either been charged or replaced... It kinda died and we had to push it into the back garden when I got it home!

Sounded like you were the proprieter! Ah well, sorry about that. We've stripped back a lot of the interior. Next stage: remove old glue, stains, clean thoroughly, check floor, replace battery, put in wing mirrors and take for a service. Oh yeah, and buy a second hand roof!

Okay - have oven, will travel! At least, I hope so. I'm beginning to realise the issues with putting my own gas appliances in. I'm sure once I'm in the swing of things, it won't seem so hard, but from this side of the job it's looking pretty fiddly. I have two problems currently: can the oven go on the 37mbar system and can I find a waterheater small enough to fit the camper?

Oh, and how hard is it to cut out and fit a vent for an oven in the vehicle panel?

And... I think I'll stop there. I have a list of questions as long as my arm. Including but not limited to, am I operating the vehicle heating system correctly because it seems pretty weak, or are they all like that anyway? Do I need to supplement the heating system?

And will it look too shabby to just varnish the plywood units instead of painting them?

New pictures soon, once I've visited the tip and got the window wipers and a few other bits back on. I think it's a good thing you don't realise what you're facing when you buy a 'van to restore otherwise no one would ever do it!

Dont worry that's what the forums here for ...

Cooker depends what it is and what your using ..... propane is 28 and butane is 37 (propane works better in the cold / butane is supposed to burn hotter in normal conditions) .... me I cook outside the van on a petrol cooker.

Cutting the van metal is pretty easy just remember the old adage measure twice cut once. No varnish them if that's what you want doesn't matter what anybody else thinks it's your van.

Heating system is it aircooled or watercooled, aircooled welcome to the world of gloves and hats, watercooled should work fine if it's not check your thermostat. There are propex gas and diesel heaters available but they are not cheap.

We dont call them money pits for nothing but heah! what else would you spend it on.
