REAR LEFT WHEEL HUB ISSUE ALL SORTED NOW,,,PHEW. Empty REAR LEFT WHEEL HUB ISSUE ALL SORTED NOW,,,PHEW.

Today i fitted a new hub after centralisig the brakes etc, then adjusted brakes as was recommended however a few issues happened, firstly after adjusting each side of the brake shoes i could not get the brakes to stop binding and secondly the top left adjuster would not adjust at all,,,so back off with the wheel and found the adjuster was fully in so stripped brakes and fed adjuster onto threads,,fine, put all back together after centralising again and only made slight adjustment to prevent brake bind, torqued up castle Nut and snapped the breaker bar,,,nothing really going my way eh, its a 1/2 square drive with 36mm socket, tried small extention bar,,snapped, tried a wrench snapped, it is only 2mm away from where it was when i fisrt lined it all up,,,so i need a little help,,bearing in mind a spanner wont work as fuch wheels,,anyone got a 1 inch drive breaker bar and a 36mm socket to match and some tinkering with brakes as hardly got much there.

any help appreciated

Ron

I would recommend taking the star adjusters off then cleaning the crap in the threads off (maybe with a tap if nec).  Put them back on with plenty of copper slip.  It should make adjusting them a breeze.  Back them off slightly from the hub, press the brakes, spin the hub, back them off again.  Repeat until you know when they are adjusted right and you can spin the hub freely and stop when applying the brakes.  Make sure you get the adjustment about equal for all the wheels.

As for breaker bar, you need a solid one.  I found an iron bar that slides over my breaker to reduce the flexing.  When torquing dont be too compelled to get the castle nut back into the exact position.  Just do a simple moment calculation:  your weight x distance from nut = torque (I cant remember what the specified torque is but you'll find it in the manual).  Should be fine with that.

Hope that helps

Hi Ron I have a 3/4  socket set you can borrow or a sawn off 36mm ring spanner and scaffold pole usually does the trick  if it clears your wheel.
either pop round for it or I can bring it round tonight don't get back till about half six but  someone should be in all day though.
cheers

Thanks Rob, yeah i think i did all the things you mentioned however i think i will take it to a garage today and get them to Torque it up to 253ft 1lbs, as i am more than sure that when i spun the hub in Belgium the guy at garage did not torque it to required setting, as for brakes i will work on it again today, Just so folk know what i have found out Ref torque setting on rear hub, if this is not done correctly it can and will cause movement between the Bearing, axle, wheel hub but will really start causing issues when cornering and cause the splines in the hub to wear very quickly,,like mine did, my problem is an issue with new brake shoes and hub not prepped properly, torque not correct on castle nut and brakes not adjusted correctly, but hey ho i will prevail in time for Big Sunday.

Rob, i have a 4ft scaffold pole but the cheap 1/2" breaker bar was not up to the job probably best with a 1" drive breaker bar to get the torque,

REAR LEFT WHEEL HUB ISSUE ALL SORTED NOW,,,PHEW. Empty JOB DONE

Post by Ronnieboy59 Wed Aug 21 2013, 17:05

After yet another broken wrench i decided Peter Howard was my best bet, when he checked Torque it was fine so off home i went,,,,very gingerly as had virtually no brakes, Jacked the bus up and got the wheel off, fitted new split pin,,,then tried to adjust brakes by the book,,,did not work,,so tried tried and tried again and finally got it to bite, now handbrake and footbrake are back to where its safe,,Have bought another wheel hub, split pin, Castle nut and brake cylinder just in case,,but good for spares anyway,,thanks for the pointers and tips folks all were a great help, learning as i go.
