STARTING ISSUES AGAIN Empty STARTING ISSUES AGAIN

Post by Ronnieboy59 Tue Mar 19 2013, 18:01

Over the last few weeks i have had starting isues again with the bus, turn on the ignition and have both ignition and oil lights, turn key to start and nothing, not even a click, left for Dubaid Friday it then started 1st time however with a little screech when starting, whilst at Dub aid (in the very inclement weather) tried to start bus but was very slow to turn the starter, battery is fine and all electrics working ok, now back and tried to start bus to give a clean and get the mud off and totally nothing on the turn of the key other than oil lights and ignition light, been under the bus and cleaned terminals etc, rocked the bus back and forth, still nothing, IS IT YET another starter motor as i only changed it just over a year ago with a bosch one, is the starter motor gear caught up in the flywheel ? or has it been stuck and burnt out the solenoid ? dont really want to shell out for another starter motor just to find out it could be something else more minor.
any pointers appreciated.
should i try a screw driver over the terminals on starter motor and solenoid, will i get a shock ?
Thanks
Ron

Could be several things ron, I had similar problems last year and changed loads of things. If the solenoid isn't clicking it could be duff or not getting power check you have a good earth should be one on the gearbox mount . You could try a hot start relay kit as this short cuts the ignition switch which just operates a relay next to the starter so the full 12 volts goes to the solenoid. Peter Good does kits but a relay from maplins does the same job. Done this on mine so i can turn the engine over from the engine bay.
I have changed the starter motor new battery new starter motor bush new wiring in the past year and it still occasionally sticks the odd time so have given up for now.

STARTING ISSUES AGAIN Empty All sorted now,,,I hope

Post by Ronnieboy59 Wed Mar 20 2013, 16:03

Cheers Owen for the reply, yes it could have been all sorts wrong so i started at the Ignition and fuses etc, all seemed ok, then checked if i had an Earthing strap on the gearbox to the chassis,,not present so made one up,,,still not starting,,,Moved to the Starter motor and cleaned all connections, crossed the terminals with a screw driver and got the bus started switched off then tried with the key again, still not starting,,Removed Starter motor and cleaned all terminals, and by chance i had a 12v starter motor bush so decided to change it over, tried removing the starter bush from the housing with a bolt of similar size and it came out fairly easy,,,However it Totally disintegrated when i got it out,,,Tried fitting the replacement bush but would not fit the hole,,thoughts were should i have got a 6v to 12v bush as it appeared too thick for the hole,,,after filing it down and sanding it i replaced and tightened up the starter motor, all cables etc,,,,Started on the button on / off 6 times and sounds much better,,problem solved i hope, pain was trying to do up the long bolt on the starter on my own but managed it and Job Done,

Thanks for the info all

Glad its sorted fingers crossed it be okay. Had similar problems fitting starter bush in my gearbox think the quality of the bushs are poor and slightly oversize which doesn't help.
cheers
