And second of all is their any torque figures I need to be aware of? Baring in mind I can't get a socket over the actual nut?

Cheers

It's a clamp nut and yes it's normal for the front wheels. "Hub nuts" are only on the back wheels and have quite some torque on them.

Loosen off the hex screw and the clamp nut should be able to move by hand if not use a normal spanner to undo (can't remember what size at the mo) When doing the clamp nut back up you should be able to just move the washer just behind it with a screw driver. If you can't then the clamp nut is on too tight and your bearings will be too tight too. Also when tightened and wheel on you should be able to notice slight play 0.12 mm when holding the wheel on opposite sides and rocking it.

The torque for the clamp nut is 7ft lb while turing the brake drum but as you say not many people have the right sized socket for it.

Don't forget to tighten the hex socket again that only needs to be 7ft lb too. that will lock the clamp nut off.

Hope that makes sense.
