Engine is back in the beetle but looks like the electronic ignition has given up the ghost but it also has developed a strange noise I can't seem to identify any ideas please doing my head in.

Engine removed clutch replaced, oil pump replaced, pushrod tubes replaced and stock exhaust put on.

Engine put back in new leads, spark plugs coil and pulley swapped electronic dizzy for standard 009 all works but got this strange noise.

I have checked the timing . . . but am stuck!

Can't really tell from the video what the suspect noise is. Can you describe it?  I assume you've checked for it with the fan belt off?

Cheers Rob, there is a put put sound here is the second video, I re-checked all the valves etc off it seems to be coming from left hand side (facing) engine .... possibly number 4 as seems to be quieter if I disconnect that plug.

I re - checked all the valves timing etc and still there, last thing for me to do really is take the exhaust off and refit in case I have a leak although it is not obvious.

I think you might be right with the exhaust.  I had a similar noise that was remedied when I tightened the header and the pre-heat pipe joint.
Does coverin up the exhaust / pea shooters give you a better indication of the source?

it lives ....Cheers Rob it was the a tiny leak in the left pre heat only noticed once I totally removed the exhaust. Had to place two gaskets in there and a little bit of paste and it now sounds like a beetle again. Had an issue with the clutch which I had not come across before basically drive for a while and then it would be difficult to go in 1st, 2nd or reverse. Turned out after a bit of research the clutch tube down the centre tunnel can break off its mounts mine had at the front .... some micro surgery with some cable tie's has fixed until I can weld it back on properly.
